The University of Illinois just wrapped up another huge recruiting weekend with CIA Bounce and Huntington Prep star Xavier Rathan-Mayes coming in for an official visit to campus.
We caught up with Rathan-Mayes to get a breakdown and his thoughts on the visit.
“Just hung out really, I went to lunch with the coaches, went to dinner with the coaches, watched practice and went to the football game. I had a lot of fun. It was really great experience to visit Illinois.”
Rathan-Mayes has developed a strong comfort zone with the Illinois coaching staff.
“They are just guys that I can talk to about anything. Coach (Dustin) Ford and I are close as well as Coach Groce and I. I feel really comfortable with those guys.”
The fact that Rathan-Mayes is a huge fan of Illini legend Deron Williams has become a recruiting point.
“Well really they want me to come in and anchor the program like Deron (Williams) did. I can come in and have a big role doing what I do best, making my teammates better and scoring the basketball. Really to be compared to D-Will is just an honor.”
He has also bonded with new Illini pledge Kendrick Nunn.
“We are pretty cool, we played against each other in EYBL. We were hanging out last night and we talk over text a lot. He doesn’t pressure me a whole lot, we don’t always talk about basketball and recruiting.”
Rathan-Mayes has narrowed his list down to Florida State, Illinois and UConn, and will announce his choice on October 13. He will be glad when it is all over.
“Definitely looking forward to when I announce my decision. This has been a long process and when I get it over with I will be able to focus on school, basketball, and being an All-American this year.”
